Joint Council President and President of Teamsters Local 988, Robert Mele spoke in support of the D.R.I.V.E. Resolution at the 2011 and 2016 International Brotherhood of Teamsters Convention.

The 2016 Teamsters Local Union No. 988 D.R.I.V.E. Campaign was conducted earlier this year with the assistance of the IBT D.R.I.V.E. Department. President Robert Mele and the IBT planned the campaign last December and assigned Lead Business Representative Craig Cunningham as the Local Union Coordinator. The Local has had very successful campaigns since 2007 when over 1,000 D.R.I.V.E. cards signed in three weeks.
Grady Tatum, IBT Southern Region D.R.I.V.E. Field Coordinator and Craig Cunningham Business Agent and Local 988 D.R.I.V.E. Coordinator lead an extremely successful effort this year with over 1,700 cards signed in the eight day campaign!
Grady Tatum said it was due to the dedication of the Local's Principle Officer, Robert Mele, Local Coordinator and Business Agent Craig Cunningham, the Executive Board and Local Drive Captains, Stewards, Business Agents and Staff.
The IBT Director of the Department of Field Action, Christy Bailey, personally recognized Local 988's outstanding  accomplishment at the 2009 Unity Conference. Christy said she wished every Local Union was as committed to the D.R.I.V.E. effort as Local 988. In fact, Teamsters Local Union No. 988 received six D.R.I.V.E. awards since the 2010 Unity Conference.
Teamsters Local Union No. 988 would like to thank the Stewards and members for assisting in this campaign and once again making it very successful.
Big Business spends big money in Washington to influence members of Congress and push their anti-worker plans. They outspend working families on politics by more than 15-1.Through grassroots political action and aggressive lobbying on Capitol Hill and in State Houses and City Halls across America, Teamsters have stopped some of the worst attacks on working people. But Big Business is pushing their agenda harder than ever. That means we have to fight back stronger than ever. And we have to move forward with our own programs, like improving job safety, fighting for affordable childcare, and stopping abuses by corporate health providers and insurance companies. You can take a stand for working families by contributing to DRIVE – the Teamsters’ political action committee. Your contribution will support grassroots action by Teamster families to stand up to Big Business interests”. IBT D.R.I.V.E Department
